Project Description

I was asked by a new customer to produce a colour scheme for there Hall, Stairs and Landing. Their property is situated on a private housing estate which was built in the 1970’s, due to the architectural importance and merit of the estate it became a conservation area. The customer wanted to keep all the details of the interior which included the open plan layout, open tread wooden staircase and minimalistic door frame and architrave details. The customer had sourced a variety of ‘Retro’ 1970 inspired furnishings and had tried a variety of colours which didn’t really manage to tie all the aspects of the interior together.

I started with the main focal point of the entrance, which was the open plan staircase, I specified to sand all the woodwork back through the layers of previously applied stains and varnishes, and r stain in walnut, and built a scheme around that.

The colour opted for was Dulux ‘Dusted Moss’ which is a mix of grey and green this worked well with the natural tones of the wood, we also decided on using a slightly darker colour on one of the walls leading into the kitchen to add a little contrast. We still used white emulsion for the ceiling due to the landing being quite dark, but to help tie in the wall colour we opted to use an off white colour for the woodwork on the skirting, doors, stair framework and door frames.

All this managed to produce an interior that help balance the tones of the wooden staircase, walls and woodwork together, whilst still producing a light open plan feel to the space.
